Please listen to Dr. Attia’s Ted Talk in the resources for this week and then respond to the following questions:

  • Pick a top health issue in your community and describe some ways in which a nurse might improve this issue at the population level.
  • Are the problems that your colleagues are sharing the same as you are seeing in your communities, or are they different?

Question 2

Understanding the different types of research is a critical skill for the nurse researcher and nursing professional. As a current nursing professional, consider how understanding the different types of research may be conducive to achieving a particular mission in your health care setting, such as developing an intervention to address a quality or patient safety problem. This knowledge can also be a step toward assuming a nursing leadership position. As a critical component of your nursing toolkit, differentiating between the types of research is a fundamental step toward enacting change through the process of research.

For this Discussion, please review the following:

  • Think about clinical practice problems you have seen in health care that compromise patient safety and health outcomes. For example, nursing-sensitive indicators reflect high-priority practice problems, which are described in the article by Martinez, Battaglia, Start, Mastal, and Matlock (2015).

Response

The issue of concern that is seen in the community is the rising cases of obesity among the people in the community. This has resulted in the continuous hospitalization and readmission of the patients as a result of other health conditions associated with obesity such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Sangrós et al. (2018) adduce that the cases of patient obesity have extensive impacts on the healthcare standard of the community due to the various health issues that are associated with the condition. In this regard, there is a need for the healthcare providers such as nurses to help in the presentation of strategies that could help in the management of the issue and hence reducing the number of people who are getting obese.

The nurses have a role to play in the process of reducing the cases of obesity. This is mainly seen as a result of the ability of the nurses to help in teaching the community on the risk factors that are associated with the cases of obesity. This will in turn help in ensuring that the people in the community can be able to avoid the risks and stay healthy. The education of the community on the process of use of healthy food and taking part in regular exercises is as well expected to help in the management of the chances of the improved care process.

There are other interventions that have been presented and that are expected to help in the reduction of the cases of obesity. Swinburn et al. (2015) espoused that a policy for the regulation of the kind of meals that are taken by school going children will help in the management of the issues of obesity among the younger people. This may, however, face objection from the people who may not be able to cater for the kinds of food that are needed and hence the nurses are supposed to help in the education of the people in the community on the importance of the various issues of concern and the strategies of change….
