Purpose

This assignment provides the opportunity for the student to complete an analysis of a concept found in the nurse practitioner role supported by a nursing theory using an identified process. The assignment fosters analytical thinking related to the selected concept as well as application within the profession.

Description of the Assignment

This assignment presents a modified method for conducting a concept analysis of one concept that is important and useful to the nurse practitioner role.  The concept for this assignment must be supported by a published nursing theory. The selected concept is identified and then the elements of the analysis process are applied in order to synthesize knowledge for application as demonstrated through the creation of a model case. Theoretical applications of the concept are also discussed. Non-nursing theories may not be used. Scholarly literature is incorporated throughout the analysis.

Concept Analysis

Introduction

The process of concept analysis is a strategy used in the dissection of a concept to elements that are understandable for it to be made clear for nurses. When there is lack of clarity in a given concept there are risks in provision of care due to the risk of having a poor interpretation. Concept analysis is therefore critical for the provision of a theoretical framework in scientific knowledge and allows for healthcare providers to be in a position to differentiate concepts that are ambiguous and those that are not ambiguous in nursing. Swiger, Vance, and Patrician (2016) argue that concept analysis plays an important role in ensuring that there is promotion of understanding of concepts by the determination of the defining attributes, the antecedent, as well as the consequences of a certain concept. This paper seeks to present concept analysis with the concept being focused on being caring.

Definition/Explanation of the selected nursing concept

The concept of caring has been selected for analysis. Drahošová and Jarošová (2016) define caring as the feeling and the exhibit of concern as well as showing empathy and compassion to others. This is seen in the instance where one shows a positive relationship with the others, when one is sensitive to the others, and in the case where one shows a concern and willingness to help.

The concept of caring in healthcare is of importance in that it helps in the promotion of trust in the health setting and reduces issues of anxiety as argued by Cook and Peden (2017). With caring in the health setting, there is an ease in establishment of communication among the stakeholders and the collection of information on the patient care needs is made easier. The concept of caring is affected by the experience that a nurse has, the healthcare environment, the qualities of the nurses, as well as the professionalism that the nurses has….
